Since 1987 the Melton Tuba Quartett goes new ways playing the tuba. In Germany and all over the world during its performances it understands to touch and inspire its audience with its music. The four members of the ensemble, all tuba players at leading German orchestras, always manage to conjure surprise onto the faces of the audience.

Three years ago the idea of something completely new was developed: a Concerto Grosso for four tubas and a big symphony orchestra.
After the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra – Bavarian State Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra signalized their support, it was possible to place a joint composition order to Prof. John D. Stevens from Madison, Wisconsin, USA. In August 2010 the historically first piece for this instrumentation was finished. The piece has four movements: Intrada, Scherzo, ballad and for the final a tango-tarantella – the Grand Concerto 4 Tubas!
The world premiere conducted by Carl St.Clair will take place on November 9th 2011 at the Mercator Hall Duisburg. There will be more performances of the opus with the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra on November 11th 2011 at Duisburg and on November 11th 2011 at Coesfeld. The Dresden Philharmonics conducted by Stefan Solyom will play at the Dresden Kulturpalast on November 26th and 27th 2011. An open air concert will take place on the occasion of the Flower and Garden festival at Bamberg on June 22, 2012. Further concerts conducted by Markus Poschner will be on June 23 and 24, 2012 at Schweinfurt and Fuerth.
